General Dentistry

Knoxville Dental Center offers all types of general dentistry services. These services can get you out of pain or repair broken teeth. These services include:

Dental Cleaning

Even with careful brushing and flossing, regular teeth cleaning (prophylaxis) by a dental hygienist is recommended to remove tartar (mineralized plaque). These prophylaxis treatments are especially helpful in the areas that are difficult for a patient to reach. Professional cleaning includes tooth scaling and tooth polishing. If an excess amount of tartar has accumulated, a professional cleaning will also include debridement by the hygienist.

However, in between cleanings by a dental hygienist, good oral hygiene is essential for preventing cavities, tartar build-up, and gum disease.

Dental Fillings

A dental filling is a dental restorative material used to restore the function, integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from caries (cavities) or external trauma. It is also lost intentionally during tooth preparation to improve the esthetics or the physical integrity of the intended restorative material.

Various materials can be used for your fillings. At Knoxville Dental Center, we prefer to use composite resin fillings, which are commonly known as “white” or “tooth colored fillings”.

Dental Crowns

Crowns are essentially “caps” created to cover the natural tooth structure. Crowns are typically used for two purposes. Crowns may be used to improve the esthetic results of a tooth or to protect the integrity of the underlying tooth structure by providing protection for the tooth. An example of this would be a tooth with a large crack or a tooth with a large filling may necessitate a crown. Our staff typically uses all ceramic crowns because a ceramic crown provides the best esthetic results.

Pediatric Dentistry

We are able to accommodate almost all children for their first dental appointment. Contact us to see if we are a good fit for you and your child. If a child needs dental work and is apprehensive, we offer nitrous oxide sedation or “laughing gas” for the pediatric patient. If the work is extensive, the child may be referred to a pediatric dentist.

Tooth Extractions

The staff at Knoxville Dental Center will remove teeth only after the x-ray and exam suggests that an oral surgeon does not need to remove the tooth. Some teeth can be more difficult to extract thus resulting in a referral to an oral surgeon.

Root Canals

The first thing to know is that root canals are painless when you are properly numb by a local anesthetic. Once you are numb, you will not feel the doctor perform the procedure. Root canals remove the nerve in a tooth and replace the nerve with a filling material. This is done to remove the source of pain from an infected or inflamed nerve.

Dentures & Partial Dentures

A thorough exam and treatment plan by our dentists will decide if a patient should be a candidate for a denture or partial denture in a dental arch.

Occlusal Guards for TMD problems

Clinching and grinding teeth can cause “TMJ” or what we call tempromandibular disorder. Usually an occlusal appliance typically referred to as a night guard, occlusal guard, or a bite guard can be fabricated by the dentists to relieve the symptoms mentioned above. More difficult cases may be referred to specialists in this field.
